International historic motoring race to be held in East London
East London – This weekend East London, with support from Premier Hotels & Resorts, will play host to the international historic race series, Wings & Slicks. This is the first time this prestigious motoring event will be held in South Africa.
Premier Hotels & Resorts Wings & Slicks is a one lap race by 16 single-seater Formula 1 racing cars from the 70’s and 80’s. Border Motorsport, organisers of the event, received nearly 100 entries for this year’s race. “We are thrilled with the support Wings & Slicks have received so far. This is the first time we are hosting it in South Africa but it is set to become an annual event.” Says Dave Kirkman from Border Motorsport.
Supporting the nostalgic theme of the event and to commemorate over 100 years of aviation, there will be ‘fly-bys’ of 4 historic aircrafts including a Tiger Cub.
A line-up of some of Wings and Slicks cars are: SanaF5000; PilbeamMp F5000; Brabham Bt40 F2; Lola T460 Formula Atlantic, Ralt Rt4; Modus Formula Atlantic; Maurer MM82; Pilbeam Mp522000; Pil Mp52 FF2000; Reynard 853 F3; Reynard 863 F3; Argo JM8 F3 and others.
“East London is playing host to more and more top international events and we are proud to be part of this growth through the support of events like Wings & Slicks,” says Eugene Oelofse, Marketing Manager of Premier Hotels & Resorts.
The event is taking place at the East London Grand Prix Circuit. Gates open at 06.30am and close at 18.00pm and races are on Saturday 15 December and Sunday 16 December. In December 1962, Graham Hill secured the World Formula One Driver’s Championship in East London, simultaneously earning British Racing Motors the Formula One Constructors Championship in the same event.
The first motorised flight in South Africa took place in East London in 1909.

ELICC hosts SATMA Awards 2012

Tomorrow promises to be an exciting day in East London as the South African Traditional Music Achievement (SATMA) Awards will be hosted in the heart of East London at the prestigious East London International Convention Centre. The SATMA Awards were incepted in 2005 to promote, uplift, and award traditional musicians across racial and ethnic background.
This will be the 7th Annual SATMA Awards 2012 which will be hosted in the Eastern Cape Province (East London), in partnership with the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, SABC, National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHC), Ilanga newspaper, the Buffalo City Metro and Premier Hotels & Resorts. The ELICC will welcome the SATMA Awards Ambassador for 2012, Ntando Bangani who is South Africa’s top artist, songwriting genius and one of the country’s most important musical finds of the last decade.
This promises to be another successful event to be hosted at the East London International Convention Centre.
